Harvest time

2002

The start of the vintage proved tricky across most premium wine districts of South Australia. Cool weather interrupted and a second flowering occurred, perhaps connected to warm weather, resulting in varying levels of berry growth and ripeness. Late hand pruning in the Reschke vineyard delayed bud burst for more favourable conditions. Autumn was cool and sunny with below average temperatures in March, and slightly higher than average in April. Late harvest was attributed to a cool spring, which delayed flowering and was then followed by a mild summer; this ensured the vines started their maturation later than usual and remained 'behind schedule' for the entire season. The outcome was very low yields (just over 1 tonne/acre) of small, thick-skinned and ripe berries.
